Overview of publications

In this chapter, I provide an overview of all my publications that have appeared up to the end of 2025. The total number is approaching 600; I hope to be able to add a few more (or preferably quite a few more) in the years to come.

My most recent papers were written together with Prof. Dr. Thomas Rustemeyer and Dr. Norbert Ipenburg from the Department of Dermatoallergology at Amsterdam University Medical Centers (almost everything there is in English). Since June 2023, I have held a guest appointment with the department (unpaid, but that doesn’t bother me at all), and my first task was to supervise medical students during their scientific research projects. Fortunately, I can do everything from home (I’ve also learned how easy and useful videoconferencing can be), so I don’t have to travel to Amsterdam — I’ve become a bit of a recluse by now. I feel very fortunate that I’m still able to do this at my age (now 74, born in 1951) and that my experience and efforts are appreciated!

Several studies with my first and second students have already been published. All of this research focuses on allergy to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in nail cosmetics, which is currently reaching epidemic proportions. It has now been shown that almost 4% of all women tested with patch tests in Amsterdam are allergic to HEMA. In two-thirds of these cases, the allergy is caused by nail cosmetics such as gel nails, acrylic nails, and semi-permanent nail polish. We wrote a nice piece about this (in Dutch) in the Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Dermatologie en Venereologie, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Downloads page (linked at the bottom of each page). It’s also very accessible for readers without a medical background and includes some beautiful photographs.

Since March 2024, I have also been supervising a PhD candidate who is studying allergy to glucose sensors and insulin pumps used by patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Several studies are in progress, and we expect this project to keep us busy for another two to two and a half years. I hope I’ll be able to attend her PhD defense — preferably as a co-supervisor, of course.

Incidentally, I have just written a review article on this topic, which we plan to submit soon to the medical journal Contact Dermatitis. Don’t be alarmed — the manuscript is nearly 80 pages long and far too big. I decided to split it into two papers, otherwise it would probably never be accepted.

UPDATE – April 24, 2025: Both articles have now been published.

You will notice that I show some cartoons here and there 'ter vermaeck' (a medieval Dutch expression for 'for amusement') except in the lists with 'All publications'. Since lists alone are obviously boring and of interest to hardly anyone, I have also included in many places some nice clinical pictures with explanatory text and some more information about a particular book or article, when interesting enough for the highly honored public. And of course the necessary anecdotes are not missing! So please have a look and you will not be disappointed..........
