Chapters in books

I was sole or first author (n=59) or co-author (n=13) of my 72 chapters in books. Eleven were chapters in Dutch books, 61 in international publications. From 1980 to 2000, they were mainly chapters in the various editions of Meyler's side effects of drugs and the Side effects of drugs Annuals. From 1980 to 1984 Johan Nater was the first author. He had previously written the chapters on his own and had invited me to co-write them during my training as a dermatologist. In 1985 I became the first author (Johan no longer co-wrote, but I thought it was natural to mention his name for a while longer) and from 1990 on I was the sole author. Johan was a professor in Groningen at the time and retired in 1991. There are a total of 27 chapters in this book series. In 2000 I had had enough and my last contribution was to the 14th edition of the 'Big Meyler' in 2000. Elsevier was very unhappy with my 'resignation'.

Contact dermatitis

In the late 1980s, a number of dermatologists from various European countries had conceived the plan to write a handbook on contact allergy; it appeared in 1992 as Contact Dermatitis. The editors had asked me to write two chapters for that book, one on cosmetics (after all, I had recently obtained my PhD on this topic) and the second on patch test concentrations and vehicles (following my 1986 book Patch testing). I have written that latter chapter in all subsequent editions of the book Contact Dermatitis, most recently in 2020 (6th edition).

I first wrote the chapter on cosmetics (Cosmetics and skin care products) with Ian White from London as co-author. In 2006, in the fourth edition, without consulting me, he took over everything and made himself first author and in 2011 brought in a third author; I was still mentioned as a co-author. I don't know why he did that. It wasn't comme il faut, but I didn't ask him why  and I let it rest, quite against my character actually, probably because I like him. The publisher Springer did not produce a printed book of the latest edition, only E-books are still being produced and online platforms.

Kanerva's occupational dermatology

In the late 1990s, Lasse Kanerva, a dermatologist from Finland who had a special interest in occupational dermatoses, came up with the plan to write a book about skin disorders caused by the profession (including, of course, allergic contact dermatitis) and I was invited to write a chapter on fragrances. That was probably because I had shortly before written an extensive review article about fragrances and essential oils in the journal Contact Dermatitis together with Peter Frosch from Germany (29 pages, largest article until 2022 in that journal, De Groot tends to be somewhat verbose). He also asked me to write another chapter on, you can guess, I presume, patch test concentrations and vehicles. From that moment on, I wrote my own book on the subject as well as the corresponding chapters in the two standard works on contact allergy! An abridged version of the book was published in 2003. The second and third editions were published in 2012 and 2019. In 2012, Lasse Kanerva was seriously ill and hardly or no longer contributed. As a tribute to his initiative and significance for occupational dermatology, the book was renamed Kanerva's occupational dermatology, a nice gesture. Essential oils were added to my Fragrances chapter – I believe at my own suggestion. In both editions I also wrote a chapter Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasers, together with Mari-Ann Flyvholm from Denmark. In 2009 and 2010 I had written a large series of publications on this subject in the journal Contact Dermatitis, for which I invited Gerda Lensen and Pieter-Jan Coenraads from Groningen as co-authors, and, depending on the specific subject, a number of foreign experts, including Mari-Ann Flyvholm (Denmark), Torkil Menné (Denmark), Ian White (United Kingdom), Philippe LeCoz (France), Howard Maibach (United States), and Detlef Emeis, Jürgen Brinkmann and Johannes Geier (all three from Germany). I wrote all but 1 article, the others could give comments. I only really needed the expertise of Detlef Emeis, because it concerned an analytical subject of which I had little knowledge, and he was therefore also first author. Springer is currently planning the 4th edition of 'Kanerva' in 2024 and I was invited to write 3 chapters once more. I have consented: a task for doing during the winter months!

Other books

In addition, I wrote chapters in other English books (see below) and in Dutch books. The Dutch-language books included handbooks on dermatology and venereology, on allergies and on summaries of guidelines. By invitation I was co-author in 2 popular science books by Jannes van Everdingen, the chapters of which were not written by me. I had the most fun writing the chapter 'Memories of a former assistant' in the book Vallen en Opstaan, in which I described my experiences during my training as a dermatologist in Groningen in the second half of the 1970s. This chapter is printed here in full (I may not yet have added a translation in English, please check). If you haven't done it yet: read it! There's a lot to laugh about.

The ninth edition of Meyler's Side Effects of Drugs (the green one) contained the first book chapter in which I was co-author. Five more editions of the 'Big Meyler' would follow (14th edition in 2000) and 19 'Annuals' (22nd edition in 1999). The books first got bigger and later got thicker and thicker.

The latest edition of Meyler's side effects of drugs in which I wrote a chapter which had grown to 34 pages. My announcement that I wanted to stop was not understood by Elsevier and I had the impression that I was somewhat resented. Starting with only dealing with the side effects of topical drugs ('Drugs used on the skin'), the chapter was later expanded to include cosmetics and the side effects of therapies specific to dermatology such as retinoids and oral photochemotherapy (PUVA), so that the title was changed in 2000 to 'Dermatological drugs, topical agents and cosmetics'. The quality of the scan of the opening page of the chapter shown is of very poor quality, because the book has more than 1800 pages and it was impossible to position page 447 flat on the scanning plate.

The year before this book came out, I had written an extensive review article about allergies to fragrances with my co-author Peter Frosch: De Groot AC, Frosch PJ. Adverse reactions to fragrances. A clinical review. Contact Dermatitis 1997;36:57-86.

My German is not as good as the two last publications above suggest. I was allowed to provide the copy for the first edition in 2002 in English and it was then translated into German. Prof. Jochen Brasch then - understandably - wrote the second edition himself and was kind enough to let me be a co-author (which is also common practice or at least should be).

This book provides an overview of important Dutch contributions to international dermatology. I was invited as one of 10 non-academic dermatologists because of my dissertation Adverse reactions to cosmetics  in 1988 and my subsequent activities as 'Convenor' of the Working Party European Community Affairs of the European Society of Contact Dermatitis. Together with great efforts of the other members of the working group An Dooms-Goossens (Belgium), Peter Frosch (West Germany), Nicole Hunziker (Switzerland), Torkil Menné (Denmark), Antonella Tosti ( Italy), and John Wilkinson (United Kingdom), we managed to have EU legislation adopted on mandatory ingredient labeling on all cosmetics in the European Union, which became effective in 1997.
